Language and Diabetes – Wednesday 5/18
There is an old saying that states “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. I’m willing to bet we’ve all disagreed with this at some point, and especially when it comes to diabetes. Many advocate for the importance of using non-stigmatizing, inclusive and non-judgmental language when speaking about or to people with diabetes. For some, they don’t care, others care passionately. Where do you stand when it comes to “person with diabetes” versus “diabetic”, or “checking” blood sugar versus “testing”, or any of the tons of other examples? Let’s explore the power of words, but please remember to keep things respectful.
Well, this is a tough topic. Not in the way that I can’t discuss it or its difficult to discuss, but in the way that words/language can be a rough and tough thing. I feel deeply that words have a VERY and I mean VERY STRONG POWER. The words we choose to use everyday effects our psyche. Our psyche then effects our outlook and our outlook becomes manifested in everyday happenings.
I’m sure many of you have heard of the book and maybe even watched the movie, The Secret. I know this book and it’s ideas are now somewhat ancient history, but the foundation rings very true to this topic.
Words have a power. We can control the words we choose to say. I don’t know exactly how I feel about the specifics. It’s up to each person to decide what feels right or wrong, good or bad in the way of word choice. For me, I like to say “person or people living with diabetes.” I feel that diabetes or any other health issue does not define a person. The idea of “living with” seems more fitting as it is something one handles and creatively explores day to day. If it helps you to say “checking” blood sugar rather than “testing” blood sugar then say it.
I practice speaking in a meaningful, positive way each day. It’s not always easy to choose my words, and believe me I’m not perfect with this practice, but I try.
How would you speak to your child self? With love and compassion right?
When it comes to word choice, what we believe deep within our emotional core and speak, we bring about.
The word to you is truth and therefore is law.
A key to living a vibrant healthy life is over-standing (as opposed to under-standing) the power of the word. If using the word over-standing because “over” is better than “under” makes sense in your mind and heart, then choose this word. If it doesn’t make sense to you then don’t. When I say “make sense” I mean it resonates with you emotionally.
All life is a vibration and the intention or meaning of words is crucial in creating a harmonious peaceful co-creation. When words are used not just viciously but unconsciously, life can become an unconscious creation. We have the POWER right now, and in every changing moment to create a conscious, positive and loving verbiage to create a more harmonious vibration for ourselves and the world around us.
